MEO revolutionizes the market with the launch of the first national 10 Gbps offer

MEO revolutionizes the market with the launch of the 1st national 10 Gbps offer

The 10Gbps service is aimed at families with several connected devices and at small and medium-sized businesses with increasingly faster internet needs, with lower latency and greater reliability, in order to guarantee the best service experience under any circumstances. With this launch, MEO once again demonstrates its ability to innovate, anticipate and support all the connectivity needs of the present and the future.

MEO's history of innovation has accompanied and anticipated market changes in Portugal and around the world. In 2008, 1.5 billion people around the world accessed the Internet. Today, according to the UN, that number has risen to 5.3 billion (66% of the world's population). In Portugal, the number of Internet users has grown from 2 million to over 4 million (source: Pordata) and the average consumption per fixed access has risen from 1 million gigabytes in 2015 to over 8 million gigabytes in 2022.

This whole digital transformation has been greatly driven in recent years by the pandemic and is leading to new digital consumption habits: we consume an increasing number of hours of content (more immersive and with greater image definition), we have more and more interconnected devices and we use the cloud more. This reality means that there is a growing volume of data and a demand for greater speed in accessing it.

MEO's new offer, available from today in all the country's district capitals, responds to this context by anticipating the growing need of families and companies for processing capacity combined with speed and low latency. It comes in several new packages, under the Speed Edition umbrella, with prices starting at 99.99 euros/month. All the packages include the new fibergateway router - which supports connections of up to 10Gbps and WiFi 6, as well as an intelligent MEO Smart WiFi extender, which allows all the rooms of home or the office to be covered with the capacity, speed and quality of service of the fixed internet network.

After being the first company to bring XGS-PON technology to Portugal, in March last year, through a pilot project in nine Portuguese cities, MEO is now the first operator to commercially launch this offer. It is also the operator's first simultaneous launch, for families and companies, under the single MEO brand.

This disruptive offer is the result of a project entirely conceived and developed with Portuguese engineering from Altice Labs in Aveiro. Altice Labs' research and development work has led the history of innovation in Portugal and continues to anticipate market trends and needs.

In May of this year, Altice Labs carried out a real demonstration of 25G-PON technology connected to the public network for the first time in the country, anticipating future speed and data volume needs which are growing exponentially. Soon, these high-speed technologies - 10 Gbps and 25 Gbps - will be used, for example, to power critical infrastructures such as airports, university campuses and hospitals and will boost industrial and business applications whose activity involves high video and data speeds or real-time synchronization processes.

Campaign "takes off to another dimension"
The launch of MEO's high-speed internet service is accompanied by a multi-media campaign that illustrates the experience of the fastest fiber ever.
Based on the concept of MEO customers taking off into another dimension, the campaign's motto comes from the "quantum leap" of going from an internet speed of 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps.

The various films in the campaign show us situations in the lives of families and companies that benefit from unprecedented speed. A reality where gamers will have the best playing conditions in the world, families will be able to be connected simultaneously without limitations and companies will have the best conditions to maximize their productivity.
This campaign also continues the celebration of MEO's 15th anniversary, under the motto "If there's this, if there's that and if there's everything, there's MEO!". Now, "If there's hyper-speed, there's MEO".
With MEO fiber reaching more than 6.3 million homes across the country, the brand continues to provide the best and most unprecedented connectivity and entertainment experiences, responding to the needs of the Portuguese with products and services that are relevant to their daily lives.

In September 2023, MEO will once again write another chapter in the history of telecommunications in Portugal, a history it has led in innovation since its launch in 2008.

We look back at the main MEO Innovation milestones:
