Altice Portugal at the Carrier Community Submarine Summit 2023

Altice Portugal at the Carrier Community Submarine Summit 2023

Lisbon will host 150 representatives of the submarine telecommunications industry who will debate new business models and investment strategies, digital transformation, the role of ISPs, peering between networks and the importance of data centers.

This conference takes place in a context in which Portugal, due to its geographical location, and Altice, due to its know-how, are positioning themselves as the gateway to Europe and a European telecommunications hub.

The Portuguese coast has always been strategic for generating network connections since it is the "host" of entry to Europe, the Atlantic and Africa. The ecosystem is now showing signs of rapid growth with new submarine cables such as Equiano, 2Africa or Medusa reaching Lisbon's shores, new satellite gateways being hosted at its teleport located in this metropolitan area, investment in new long-haul fiber routes and new data center projects being developed.

Altice Portugal plays a strategic role as a partner of these submarine cables, in terms of consultancy and infrastructure services, supported by its historical experience in this area of telecommunications at national and international level.

It will be these experiences that Altice will share in a keynote and two panel discussions with the participation of Jorge Andrade Santos, Head of International Wholesale and José Pedro Nascimento Head of Network and Operations on the themes: "New Business Models and Investment Strategies to meet cables future digital demand" and "How to interconnect now and in the future" (full program here).

Alexander Freese, Altice's Chief Operations Officer, recognizes that "Altice Portugal, as a leader in the communications sector in Portugal, is proud to contribute to the national and global economy as a partner and driver of the submarine communications industry, reinforcing its commitment to the country".

Submarine cables are essential for international connectivity, carrying 95% of intercontinental internet traffic. There are 464 submarine cables around the world, covering a total of 1.3 billion kilometers. Portugal is home to 13 cables linking Africa and North and South America to Europe.

Altice and MEO have been in the international and national submarine cable industry for more than half a century and have two strategic submarine cable stations for the country, in Sesimbra and Carcavelos.

Technology, as a promoter of the country's digital transformation, is one of the strategic pillars of Altice's operations, both in the consumer and corporate business areas and in the Wholesale area.
